Stay normal when the world is not

Mike at his “office”

For years, my husband, Mike, has gone to Panera Bread almost every day for coffee and breakfast.

When he was working full time, he usually spent an hour so at Panera before heading to the university in Denver where he was a professor.

When he semi-retired five years ago, we moved to Iowa and Mike decided to continue going to Panera every day. [Read more…]

THIS TIME, I’m going to do it…

I’m going to stay on my diet all the way to my goal. You are very determined and motivated, and you are sure that you can do it, THIS TIME!

It’s great to have that level of commitment and focus on your efforts. And maybe THIS TIME you will reach your goal and stay there. But if you are like most people, reality begins to set in and your enthusiasm fades. [Read more…]

I wrote you a letter

Dear Greg and Alice,

Thank you for the lovely card and delicious candy. I had a few pieces and took the rest to work for everybody to enjoy.

You see, having that candy in the house felt way too tempting to me. As you know, I have struggled a lot with my weight. [Read more…]

Break all the rules this December

As the holiday season gets more hectic, all your good intentions can start slipping away.

Maybe you hoped to drop another ten pounds before your work party, but the office goodies kept that from happening.

Or you convinced yourself that you were NOT going to drink rum-spiked eggnog this year, but suddenly, you’re enjoying a second cup of it.

Normalize your life to lose weight

My Colorado friend Susan called this weekend.

She sounded awful—tired, grouchy and frustrated! She said, “I have totally gone down the slippery slope with my weight-loss plan. And now I can’t seem to get back on track no matter how hard I try.”

I was surprised because Susan has already lost nearly 80 pounds and had been doing great with her program. So I asked her, “What happened to your wonderful plan? Did something bad happen that got you off track? [Read more…]

Pumpkin pancakes are eating up my calories

It’s so easy to say YES!

Go ahead and supersize my drink. Make that a cheeseburger, please. Whipped cream? Of course. I’ve already blown it, so I might as well go for it.

Adding these extras to your food choice makes as much sense as getting to the checkout at the department store and saying, “I’ve already blown my budget, so please throw in a few more outfits.” [Read more…]

I know what to do, I just don’t do it!

A couple of months ago, I ran into the sliding glass door between my patio and my home.

It was night and dark outside. For some reason, I thought the door was open, but it wasn’t and I slammed into it pretty hard.

I rubbed my the area on my shoulder where it hit the door and assumed it would be fine the next day. But it wasn’t. [Read more…]

Overeating because of your social life?

Plan B

I seem to be having a lot of barbecues, parties and events this summer.

Unfortunately, those are the times I slide away from my good intentions around healthy eating and i’ve decided it’s time to change that.

I remember one of my coaching clients struggling with the same issue. [Read more…]

Making weight loss matter

What's important to you

Kathy wanted to lose “JUST twenty pounds.”

She talked about this a lot, but since it wasn’t such a big deal, she never stayed on her diet long enough to make any progress. When I asked her about ways her weight was impacting her life, she couldn’t come up with much of anything. [Read more…]
