Overweight Kids – Idea #2

In the last post, I told you about a column written by Drs. Oz and Roizen and their recommendations for helping overweight kids.

I didn’t like some of their advice, so I’m adding my own twist to what they said.

I’ve already told you my thoughts about their suggestion that you walk or exercise with your child for two hours a day. Here’s their second “great” idea.

2. Limit screen time to a maximum of one to two hours a day.

Again, this is fine advice, but in many homes, that just isn’t practical.

Here’s my advice: Be reasonable

Don’t bug them or nag them about their screen-time activities. Instead, negotiate how much time they do these things.

You might want to include the time spent with their phone because even texting involves sitting in one place.

Instead of doing things that involve staring at a screen, invite then to play games, put together puzzles or do other types of learning activities.

Read books to them, and as they get older, have them read to you. These things will actually help them learn ways to find enjoyment and meaning without depending on TV or a device.
