Losing weight when you don’t FEEL like it

I don’t think there has ever been a harder time to lose weight!

Dealing with the Covid virus has challenged all of us, mentally as well as emotionally.

I’ve heard from many of you that the virus has made it really hard to stay motivated for losing or even maintaining your weight.

We all seem to have days when we are just sick of the whole thing and long for it to be over.

During the past six months, I have personally struggled with feeling isolated and at times a bit depressed. Like many of you, I slid back into some old habits, especially ones that involved cookies and ice cream.

Now my weight has crept up and even though it’s not extreme, I am determined to push it back down to protect my health as well as my self-esteem. The hard part is that a lot of days, I don’t feel like it!

I don’t feel like it

This past weekend, I caught myself saying “I don’t feel like it” about a lot of things, including my exercise plan. I was tired, had lots to do, and my motivation had disappeared.

Then I got to thinking about some of the other areas in my life. And I realized that even though I didn’t feel like doing laundry or cleaning my bathroom, I did those things anyway.

So I decided to apply that same push to my exercise goals, and I shoved myself out the door for my walk.

Do it anyway

If you wait until you FEEL like doing the steps required for losing weight, you’ll probably never do anything. So instead of hoping you’ll feel motivated for exercise or healthy eating, tell yourself: Do it anyway!

When you make yourself go to work or handle other challenges in your life, you focus on actions, not your feelings. So on days when you don’t feel like sticking with your diet or exercise plan, push yourself forward and “do it anyway!”

Each day, take a few “do it anyway” action steps. Over time, they will add up to a lot of changes.

You’ll also remember what it feels like to use your own power as a motivation tool. And at some point, you realize that by doing it anyway, you’re making progress again.

With time, that actually begins to FEEL great!
